GPs and their staff of nurses and other clinical and non clinical staff offer a wide range of expertise and service in sexual health. The links on this page aim to cover the names and addresses of all GP surgeries in Birmingham and give more information about each practice. Some doctors and nurses have a particular interest in young people, others in contraception and sexual health. You will be able to have an idea about their interests depending on the clinics they offer and whether their staff have higher levels of training.
You may consult ANY GP who offers sexual health as an enhanced service (you need not be registered with them).
SHIP Trained GPs
SHIP stands for 'Sexual Health in Practice'. It is a scheme where GPs and their nursing and reception staff have extra training in sexual health matters. These surgeries are trained to be particularly sensitive to the needs of young people and sexual health issues. They are able to issue free condoms and undertake pregnancy testing to their patients and often to anyone who may wish to use the service. Ask the receptionist if yours is a SHIP practice!
Enhanced Services
GP Surgeries who offer ‘enhanced’ have staff who are able to undertake more advanced sexual health services. These cover sexually transmitted infections, the insertion of coils for contraception and the contraceptive implant. Some of these practices will see you even if you are not registered with them as your general practice.
